A New Look Part III

A New Look Part III

Introducing Susan’s all-new Urban Loft collection! It’s reclaimed, industrial style on a budget. Read about the interior design just unveiled for our Urban Loft living room and dining room, and make sure to stop by our retail store to take it all in!

The third room in our newly restyled Urban Loft features a fabulous canopy bed in a very stylish satin brass finish. Ahhhh!! It’s a real home run for style and comfort, and provides the setting for a cozy, personal hideout. Set against the Bucks County historic stone walls of my retail store, Black-eyed Susan, this room depicts modern yet classic style. Let’s call it “neo-traditional.” Nothing to be afraid of, totally new, yet brimming with a traditional twist. The bed features a partially upholstered headboard and can be used as a platform bed, or one with a box spring and mattress.

There is an entire grouping of companion pieces with a stunning high boy, side tables and console/dresser. Finished in a deep, rich chocolate wood tone, this collection would be a beautiful addition to any restyling, whether it’s a new or old home, a master bedroom or guest room. As you can see, extremely versatile.

I’ve paired it with a lovely Masland leopard print wool area rug, cut to order in size, with an overlay of two hide rugs to lock in #purestyle.

The companion high boy dresser has the same rich satin brass hardware and stretcher runner at the base, and a little extra surprise in the bottom drawer…cedar lining for all your fine cashmere or silk ascots!

Here’s that cedar lined bottom drawer!

Side tables feature a glass top which has a floating drawer, giving room for interesting objects of the heart, perhaps a small tray with a favorite quote.

I’ve paired white and gold toned lamps and accessories to complete the look. Love. Love. Love.

I hope you’ll stop by to see the room for yourself if you live near or in Bucks County! We have the ability to ship furniture all over the U.S. as well, so it can be yours no matter where your roots lie. Bedrooms should be a favorite hangout space. Don’t let your’s become an “I’ll get to that room someday” project! Style, personal, chic, cozy, hip. All words to add to the description of your personal space. Let Black-eyed Susan be the inspiration you need to make it happen.

A New Look Part II

A New Look Part II

Included in the new collection of life-friendly linen finishes for your living room is my new dining collection. Reclaimed, yet refined, this grayed down wood finish is the perfect compliment to an organic-ly chic room setting. Fabulous chairs with exceptional detail can bring #purestyle into your dining space. In a kitchen, or a casual dining room, this set will slip into an easy mix with neutral tones ,but also compliment a punch of color!

This photo gives a good view of the host and hostess chairs. A slipcover look presents a waterfall tailored skirt and a bonus of hidden casters! This chair will allow any hostess to quickly slide out from the table to refill an empty glass or refill the hot bread basket. Perfection.

Note the pleated detail on the back of the side chairs and the interest of the metal frame in a rich bronze finish. That little bit of soft gold/German bronze accent is really trending and can blend with other metals in your home.

Another piece of the dining room collection is this very interesting sideboard. The contrasting light outside casing brings a fresh look to the reclaimed trend. The same beautiful soft bronze hardware has been added to the front as handles. Inside; one drawer with a silver liner and 4 shelves. But don’t think of this console as stricktly a dining piece. It will work just as perfectly as a TV console, sofa table, or room divider. Versatile and stylish!

On the dining table, I used a favorite centerpiece vessel. 52″ long , this aluminum trough is versatile enough to fill with beautiful things from season to season. In this case, I laid a dramatic long phaleanopsis orchid flat in the tray and under-laid it with large botanical leaves. If you look closely at this one, you’ll see water droplets! Perfect! #ohsosusan

While studying the new collection of The Urban Loft, stop to look at the selection of Kitchen Papers! Great for entertaining this summer, a party, or a hostess gift. Chalkboard runners (and chalk pencils for a personal note!) , assorted place mats (the fern motif is a personal favorite), just to name a few. These runners and place-mats make any family dinner more fun and entertaining, spice up a neighborhood gathering, or delight anyone as a thank you gift. With solids, stripes, birthday themes, whimsical birds, or fanciful flowers, you’ll fall for these stylish options and their function. #imafan

So stop in and take it all in…the new dining collection, and the Kitchen Paper collection…it’s a match made in heaven you can really get into!

Bring on the parties and be the centerpiece of #purestyle!

A Fresh New Look!

A Fresh New Look!

After several weeks of high anticipation for our new Urban Loft inventory, and several long days of intense preparation and delivery, styling and detailing, it is ready to unveil!

Susan’s Urban Loft has been quite a success and our first three room settings unveiled last fall sold through with great demand. So….here is another curated collection for you to be inspired by and love just as much as the first! Stop by and take in every detail, imagine it in your home. It’s #purestyle.

You will find two flanking sofas with a contrasting one seated cushion in a delicious graphite gray velvet. Two small chrome-based ottomans flank the chrome trimmed coffee table. Oh. My.

This collection is paired with multiple pieces of striking rustic gray wood, detailed with chrome bands. Wow! Below is a closeup of the coffee table. Take a look at the great accessories on the table…I’m in love with them! Simple finishes, broad leaves and succulent detail complete the look.

All in all, it’s a lovely and inviting look, appealing and comfortable. My staff and I all agree we could just move in up here…a cozy reading nook with seating for a good crowd.

The room is complimented by a coordinating console table, affordably priced and chock full of style and a bit of glam.

For those of you who were familiar with the last room settings of The Urban Loft, you may recall these fabulous pendants, seemingly hanging from mid air…connected to the suspended and beautiful sycamore logs overhead…I was thrilled these still worked into the new plan! I am in love with the new collection of accessories as well! The combination of the circular motion, moss, and succulent detail is engaging and really perfect! It’s amazing how versatile white can be and it has become a staple on my purchasing list for “must haves.”

On the other side of the room you will find these fabulous new stag horn fern bushes. The glossy leaves and motion will fool any botanical expert and you will love them! The color…the shine…the impact is all there.

These new etageres have fabric backs, touch lighting and the boon of closed storage as well. Available in several finishes, these pair with the finish on the other case-goods in the collection and provide the perfect venue for the look of today’s accessory placement…a bit more simple in nature. The use of multiple pieces repeated on various shelves is about intention and #purestyle!

I’ll detail other rooms and collections of The Urban Loft in nights to come…come in and get inspired, take a tour of our newly designed space and talk to Susan in person. Bring and book and get cozy!

It’s all about #purestyle.

Susan’s Wednesday Night Magic!

Susan’s Wednesday Night Magic!

Those of you who follow my blog know about the magic of the Wednesday Night Late Shift…the newest and most interesting inventory is reviewed and we find new inspirations as we walk the showroom, looking for the perfect placement for each exciting addition. #purestyle

I’ve added more of my favorite realistic and tender ferns…so much motion, you’ll never guess they don’t need water! (Check that clever piece of art behind them as the spots are blown off that dalmation! Oh. My.

These fresh picked tulips will fool your local florist…the weepy, fresh feel will make them your favorite too….pink or fresh green. Just. Got. To. Have.

Crystals are popping up in all the right places…these beauties mounted to acrylic bases make beautiful accents for tabletop or bookcases, bathrooms, or hall consoles…Wow!

I had to add a little pink…(is there anything wrong with that?!)

Remember the trending black and white I reported from market…my order came in! Lots of new black and white pillows for your selection!

…more black…more white. more style.

Spheres are a great accent for any tray, bowl or dish. Add several to a container of succulents or place some in a pedestal dish…this color just sings the right #purestyle . Navy and gold…what could be better?

So…Thursday should be on your radar each week to browse Black-eyed Susan for the newest additions, and right after market, when my new orders are making an appearance is the perfect time. It’s really full of inspiring displays and new offerings!

Hope to see you! You won’t be disappointed.

Fresh ideas. Fresh inventory. Fresh color . #ohsosusan #purestyle #colorcrush

Make time for a Thursday visit!

Miss Barbara Gets Into #purestyle!

Miss Barbara Gets Into #purestyle!

Designing for the delightful Miss Barbara this week has been sheer heaven! Her mother has been one of our favorite clients and friend for many years, and after completing her fifth home in a series of locations, she added her mother’s cottage into the picture.

Barbara, being a bright and entertaining 87 year old, has more entertaining stories of her youth and travels abroad than you can imagine! A genuine Southern belle, she landed back in the North Carolina mountains after years of exotic places, as well as U. S. locations. She delighted us for the past two days as we installed, primped, accessorized and dressed her new home. She gets along quite well and is looked in on by two devoted daughters, grandchildren and neighbors. She’s quite the woman of style!

This is the basic palette she agreed upon. Navy and turquoise! We incorporated her favorite collections from 87 years of life and came up with a stylish mix within her comfort zone! There was little she didn’t agree to, and Barbara kept up with our pace for two days with delight!

Two of these sweet smaller-scaled chairs in a turquoise print give way to additional seating for family and friends. We selected a painted frame for contrast and interest. Polka dots are part of the pattern play! Note the patterned carpet from Masland Carpet. We had just the right size bound for the cozy room.

Barbara’s collectibles and china found a place in her china display case (much like my old one!). With the overage from the last five homes from her daughter’s designs, we added this coveted framed art…sheet music! There are many musicians to be found in this family, and Barbara herself set the tone in her youth, playing the violin. We were thrilled to repurpose this favorite piece of art from the last home in Charleston we designed for her daughter. Books covered in sheet music, a lantern filled with assorted interests, black birds perching on the top edge…all make the room personal and inviting.

Barbara spent a number of years in Africa with her first husband and has an extensive collection of ebony figures. I love the way they are silhouetted on the top shelf of the bookshelves. It’s a bit like Noah’s Ark up there! She was thrilled with the use of them and was excited we approved and found a home for them in such a prominent spot to be admired each day.

Her bedroom incorporated some hand-me-downs from a previous home of her daughter’s on Sullivan’s Island, S.C. Dresser and nightstands were snatched up, and a formerly used trunk was painted by our own paint specialist at Black-eyed Susan. Soft tones of plum and cream create a quiet retreat for Barbara. She approved custom pillows and bedding, a new rug, new lamps and a brand new upholstered bed in her favorite style. all delivered to make this room a favorite for her. (Design by Black-eyed Susan, pillow arrangement by Barbara!) She loves the little floral pillow we were able to eek out of a small discontinued fabric memo!

(Just another shot to show you the hand-painted trunk and window fabric.)

You can see that this little lady spared no stylish suggestions for fabric and patterns in designing this room! The portrait over the high boy chest is a personal favorite that I sold to her mother years ago for her home in downtown Historic Charleston! Musically themed, vintage inspired, and just the right colors! We were thrilled to rescue this piece of art from the “unused from the past designs” pile! And I love the bench cushion fabric!

Towards the end of the day, Barbara began pulling out treasures and she came across this Elgin watch face that belonged to her mother. In a small velvet case, I insisted that we display it on her nightstand and found the perfect soft lavender vintage hobnail plate to display it on. Perfection!

In a corner of the room, facing the large picture window, we placed another reclaimed chair and ottoman from a former home of her daughter’s. Recovered in the perfect stripe in the colors of the room, we created a cozy place for Barbara to read and put her feet up. (She was quite astounded when she discovered it was perfectly allowed to put her feet up – shoes and all – on such a fine piece of furniture!)

So here she is, Miss Barbara, woman of style and fine taste! With many gifts from her darling daughter and custom design by Black-eyed Susan just for her, she is perfectly content to sun in this room and enjoy the life of a gritty 87 year old with glee.

Enjoy it for many years to come Barbara! We loved designing for you and all who visit your love filled home.

*Sigh*

Susan’s Stylewatch Report #hpmkt2017 | Day 5: Black and White

Susan’s Stylewatch Report #hpmkt2017 | Day 5: Black and White

Our last day at market was another rain-filled day…gloomy, windy, cold, and nearly impossible to get from building to building without getting drenched! Whew! You really have to be a diehard buyer to persevere! But we’ll do just about anything to bring back style.

There were loads of examples of the black and white trend, and I edited a handful of my High Point Market photos to give you some inspiration! And even better, I just painted my foyer accent wall just inside the front door at Black-eyed Susan, I also want to give you guys a good recommendation on my new unu scooter which is a great transportation…you guessed it, black! Somehow, we get a step ahead before we see these trends becoming just that, trends! Stop in and see for yourself the bold beauty and neutral impact black can have. Walls, accessories, art…try some black in your own design!

This room uses black primarily in the art and the accent pillows. Everything else; walls, rug, upholster, table…stays white in contrast. I’m in love with it!

A little texture in solids really helps too. The bold black and white print makes for a strong contrast. I’m always saying that strong contrast can be as effective as strong color. Here you can see it for yourself.

This white organic table, carved like tree branches, sets the stage for the strength of the black lamp base. Perfect harmony…black and white.

This room brings the drama of a black glass table into focus. Black is dramatic with all finishes in the gold or silver tones. Still, with a neutral sofa, the black table is the focal point by nature. A black wall behind the sofa puts the light sofa on stage.

Here you go, the black wall! Most of the time I saw a flat finish used. Silver metal table, but white accessories! Light sofa and light art…it’s a formula that really works!

Here’s an overall view of that same room. Wowza! Black. I’m really loving this strong color!

Walls and art play the black and white game perfectly here. Note the three white vases in perfect line. Black accessories on the coffee table…white books…you can’t see it, but even the chandelier shade was black! If there ever was a time you wanted to throw in a little color, say a hot pink or chartreuse green…well, that would work too! Ahhhhhh!

Another room with a black wall. Note the molding and wall are all painted black! A dark charcoal chair works nicely with the wall and of course, the white side table offers strong contrast and fabulous accent to the room. The floor is a bit blackened in the stain finish. Overall, a perfect formula for success!

This last example pretty much sums up the success of the black and white theme that every major showroom used! Black walls, black and white geometric art, black and white graphic pillows, white sofa, white table and dark if not black accents. A black printed menswear-ish chair fabric, and you have a fabulous room!

If you haven’t been to the store for a while, you can see my version of black and white with a grand Vanguard sectional that arrived just in time for my recent floor change! Black tweed sofa, black and white pillows, black and chrome accessories, fur rug…it’s a winner. I’m finding this color palette to be extremely versatile and strikingly bold all at the same time.

If you’re starting a new room and gathering ideas, put this one in the forefront of your idea folder. Do a little searching on Pinterest and Instagram and you’re bound to see plenty of inspiration! I’m really pleased with the new look incorporated into Black-eyed Susan. Stop in and see for yourself!
